As we approached the first month of 2017 at our gallery, it seems like a good time to celebrate and reminisce a years progress in the life of ‘Chandan in the City’. It’s hard to fathom just how much has happened since, both in and around our art gallery. In particular, we look back on our almost 9 years in operation with a mixture of wonder and disbelief.

It now seems like a good time to celebrate a years progress at Galeri Chandan. The Friends have collaborated with us to provide with many interesting opportunities, from exclusive exhibition previews to fascinating art talks, and we hope that you have relished the chance to enjoy art at all galleries here in Publika Shopping Gallery, Kuala Lumpur.

Even though 2016 has been quite a challenge for many involved in the art scene, we are proud to say that we have persevered.

From solo shows by MEAA 2013 winners Ong Xing Ru and Hilal Mazlan to our group shows bringing together the likes of artists from Anisa Abdullah, Daniel Fuad, Edroger Rosili, Erry Khuzairy Ali, Haslin Ismail to name a few, it is hard not to be overwhelmed by the scale of support that we still receive from all artists, art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

We have been laying low on international art shows for a bit but we still managed to bring the international to our grounds. This was made possible when our October 2016 show ‘Breathe-The Clay Chemistry’ brought forward a young artist from Japan, Satoko Ootsuki and a collaboration was sparked between two local ceramic artists Umibaizurah Mahir@Ismail and Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali.

During the year, we never fail to support our up and coming artists on their Phd researches, art talks and experimental exhibition. It was wonderful to see such positive results after all the input from the artists, volunteers and especially guests who came to engage in dialogues at our space. And not forgetting the support given by MyCreative Ventures (MYCV) on their inaugural Visual Arts Pitch (VAP) also held with much splendour at our space.

We also take last subdued year a time for us to gain back our momentum for year 2017. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side but we certainly appreciate what we have here. We really believe that Galeri Chandan punches well above its weight, and with every genre of art practice, will still give much to attract you to return again and again.

We look forward to an amazing and bountiful 2017 in Malaysia’s colourful art scene and of course lots of good art viewing and reading.
Looking forward to a busy year!
