About the Show
It is with pleasure to have the walls of White Box, MAP@Publika displaying the works of Chong Ai Lei, Muhammad Syahbandi Samat, Ng Swee Keat, Sun Kang Jye and Siund Tan – the five winners of the Malaysian Emerging Artist (MEA) Award 2011 – from 16 September until 2 October 2012.
When we gave birth to the MEA Award in 2009 together with the House of MATAHATI (HOM), we aimed for the award to strengthen the infrastructure of the Malaysian contemporary art scene; one that would serve as a stepping stone to young emerging artists in the country; those aged between 18 to 35 years old. The intent goes beyond mere recognition to deserving talents, but to also provide the artists exposure and opportunities both locally and internationally, and to nurture them further so that their potentials will not remain unrealized.
We could not have been more encouraged at the second edition of the MEA Award where we received an astounding submission of two hundred eighteen works from seventy five entries. These were carefully reviewed and shortlisted to thirty nine finalists, after which the panel of judges went through the most difficult task of naming the five winners.
In addition to cash prize, voucher for art supplies and travel grant to Manila, Philippines, this exhibition is also part of the winning prize, where the winners will showcase their works.
MEA Award is a biennial affair and is also supported by 30 Artfriends. Although only in its second edition, we have been proud with the career progress of the first edition winners, and we wish the five winners of 2011 nothing less. More importantly, we have also seen positive development on the quality of submissions during this edition, and we strongly believe that the finalists stand to benefit tremendously from the exposure as well.
This is only a beginning. Moving forward in the years to come, we hope to be raising the bar of the Malaysian contemporary art with all our might and purpose. And we hope you are with us.
