Last Thursday night, 27 October 2016 was a finale show for the management of the MEA Awards for all 5 winners of the influential Malaysia Emerging Art Awards batch 2013/14. The awards, which began in 2009, are organised by Galeri Chandan and HOM Art Trans, which has produced very successful contemporary young artists in the Malaysian art scene to date.
The opening was held at Hom Art Trans’ space in Ampang, Selangor. Despite the heavy rain and bad traffic that evening, artist Shafiq Nordin closed the sold out show entitled “Imperium” meaning absolute power in Latin to a full attendance of artists, collectors, art enthusiasts and art students.
Syafiq’s menagerie of fantastic, satirical creatures was somehow apt to the Halloween celebrations that weekend but indeed his pieces are seen as very powerful and clearly shows his survival and tales of his art journey in the medium he knows best: elaborately detailed, woodblock-print style acrylic paintings.
Congratulations once again to all 5 winners batch MEAA 2013/2014 : Ong Xing Ru, Cheong Tuck Wai , Sabihis Md Pandi, Hilal Mazlan and Syafiq Nordin. You’ve done it! Now it’s up to you to make sure it’s a success by moving forward and getting through that big door.
Imperium is showing at HOM Art Trans (No. 6A Jalan Cempaka 16, Ampang Jaya, Selangor until Nov 3. For more information, visit www.homarttrans.com or call 03-9286 7004.
